My name is Barry “Stacie” Laughton. I am running for the city council seat in ward 3 in Laconia. I have been a long time resident. I'm honored and thankful for the opportunity to serve the community that I love. I am a small business owner with our office in Laconia, and our store in Gilford NH. I live on Messer Street with my wife Lisa Laughton, with our 2 cats Ted and Homer, my companion, and service dog Winston. Let me tell you my views, let me first say that while I have a strong understanding of the city of Laconia, I have never been elected to any office, this means I will bring a fresh perspective and lots of energy to the table, I will be an open and honest city councilor, and I will be a financially conservitive council member, and I will try to reduce wasteful spending. I will have a strong focus on the less fortunate and the homeless in our community. In doing so, I will push for reform in our city welfare department. I also believe that Laconia is at a serious economic crossroads with jobs being lost and businesses moving out of the downtown area. We can not let this happen any longer and we must find a way to bring businesses back, and promote why Laconia is a great place to live and do business.

I come to Laconia by way of Nashua and I have lived here since 2003. When I was in Nashua I attended Nashua Senior High School and graduated in the class of 2002. When in high school I was a member of the student council and the NH association of student councils. After high school I participated in a wide range of political campaigns, including 2 NH Governors and 2 presidential campaigns, after which I moved to Laconia. I started volunteering for a wide range of nonprofit agencies that support children and families. In early 2005 I began college at the La cordon Bleu school for culinary arts and at the same time I was running for the first time for city council in Laconia. My educational background includes a High School Diploma, a certificate in flower art, and a certificate in Japanese flower art. I have experience in in retail management, customer sales, and service experience. As mentioned above I am a small business owner. I believe if elected I am capable and qualified for this position and the people of Laconia can count on me to do my very best in keeping this city on the right track.

10) Buy a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. These special filters trap unhealthy dust particles.

Hardly a week goes by in the U.S. without another round of jousting in the debate over whether government subsidies for ethanol are the harbinger of a brave new low-carbon world or simply to blame for the still-record food prices facing consumers.

Both sides in the debate are aggressively agitating at the moment and no doubt intent on trying to influence the incoming Obama Administration with the merits of their respective points of view.

In a nutshell, the pro-subsidies camp argues ethanol is being used as a smokescreen by food producers to keep prices up and their profits high, and it needs the subsidies to create a major job-producing industry. The naysayers want the subsidies phased out not only because they say they are driving up food prices, but also because ethanol research is now showing that corn-based biofuels could be bad for the environment as well.

Through several different programs ethanol is subsidized in the U.S. to the tune of $5 billion and, surprisingly to many observers, this is not a new phenomenon -- hand-outs for the industry have been around for 30 years.

It was, however, the Bush Administration's Energy Policy Act of 2005 that really kick-started the ethanol industry as we know it today. That act launched the Renewable Fuels Mandate, forcing state governments to blend billions of gallons of renewable fuel with gasoline by 2012 and giving ethanol producers a market for their product.

The mandate incentivized farmers to grow corn for ethanol, which no doubt was a factor in the run-up to record corn prices, leading to a knock-on effect on wider food prices as the cost of corn-based animal feed also rose.

According to economic forecaster IHS Global Insight, the bottom line for consumers was 4 percent food price inflation in 2007, and another 5.3 percent in 2008. Yet in a new report distributed last month Global Insight stressed that biofuel subsidies were just one of several factors that led the food price inflation.

In the report John Kruse, managing director of Global Insight's Agriculture Service, described as "fiction" the premise that biofuels was the only reason for the inflation. He said the causes included higher energy costs, which in turn led to higher transportation costs, higher processing costs and high fertilizer prices.

Poor weather also disrupted global wheat production in 2006 and 2007; income growth in Asia, particularly China, also led to long-term tightening of supply and demand. Biofuel was a factor, but just one of several.

Despite the release of this independent analysis the drumbeat from the blame-ethanol lobby continues. Food prices, with one or two exceptions such as milk and produce, have remained stubbornly high despite the fact that the price of a bushel of corn and cost of fuel has halved -- although it is still historically high.

In fact, while the price of everything else fell in the U.S. in October, grocery prices in the government's Consumer Price Index actually rose by 0.1 percent. Moreover, government economists are still predicting food prices will increase by as much as 4.5 percent next year although Global Insight says the worst is over and prices will rise only about 1 percent.

Meanwhile, the Grocery Manufacturers Association, the packaged food industry's lobbying organization, continues to blame ethanol for high prices. In late 2008, as part of the Food before Fuel coalition, the GMA called for the new Administration and Congress to repeal the subsidies.

However, profit and loss statistics from the GMA's member companies tell an interesting story about who is really being harmed by rising crop and transport prices. One thing is clear -- it certainly isn't the food producers.

While corporate profits are nose-diving in almost every sector, they are rising healthily at the likes of Kraft, Kellogg and Heinz. In an apples-to-apples comparison at Kraft, the company's sales rose nearly 10 percent in its latest financial quarter and profits rose 14 percent. Over at Kellogg, sales grew 9 percent and profits 12 percent. At Heinz, sales rose 4 percent and profits 22 percent last quarter.

While the food producers are doing nicely the same cannot be said for grocery chains, which face the brunt of consumer anger on a daily basis. Most of the big chains showed negligible percentage increases in profit and one, Publix, centered in the southeast U.S., saw its profits fall nearly 19 percent in the most recent quarter.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the abnormally healthy financials from the food producers has attracted the attention of politicians. Chuck Grassley, a Republican senator from the farm belt state of Iowa, is leading the attacks: " Now, my question is, will lower input costs be passed on consumers with lower food prices?"

Democratic congressman Collin Petersen of Minnesota, who is the chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, also called on GMA members to reduce prices and apologize to farmers for its anti-ethanol smear campaign.

As BusinessGreen.com reported recently, the ethanol industry has toughened its stance against its detractors by forming a new lobby group, Growth Energy, to make sure Washington and the American public understand their case. With ethanol companies struggling at present -- with the fuel being more expensive than gasoline -- it is important to the industry has a message that resonates.

Growth Energy points out that the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that for every billion gallons of ethanol produced, 10,000 to 20,000 additional, non-outsourceable, jobs will be created.

Another recently released study also proves the economic value of ethanol. That research in Texas showed ethanol raised feed prices costing Texas livestock producers $1.8 billion, but to offset that it saved the state's motorists $4 billion.

It is statistics like those that has Stewart Ramsey, senior economist within Global Insight's Agriculture Service, believing the subsidies are safe. At a time when the employment environment is dire, the Obama Administration is not going to cut funding to a new industry that can prove it is creating jobs, he says.

There are signs that the GMA and Food Before Fuel lobby are changing tack a little in attacking ethanol. There also seems to be a slight de-emphasising of the price-rise issue to instead concentrate on ethanol's supposedly detrimental affect on the environment. The World Wildlife Fund, a member of Food Before Fuel, says it has witnessed "the negative impacts of the biofuel policy not only on the environment, but on vulnerable populations throughout the world."

Renewable energy is energy generated from natural resources—such as sunlight^[2], wind, rain, tides and geothermal heat—which are renewable (naturally replenished). In 2006, about 18% of global final energy consumption came from renewables, with 13% coming from traditional biomass, such as wood-burning. Hydroelectricity was the next largest renewable source, providing 3% (15% of global electricity generaiton ^[1]), followed by solar hot water/heating, which contributed 1.3%. Modern technologies, such as geothermal energy, wind power, solar power, and ocean energy together provided some 0.8% of final energy consumption.^[1]Climate change concerns coupled with high oil prices, peak oil and increasing government support are driving increasing renewable energy legislation, incentives and commercialization. European Union leaders reached an agreement in principle in March 2007 that 20 percent of their nations' energy should be produced from renewable fuels by 2020, as part of its drive to cut emissions of carbon dioxide, blamed in part for global warming.^[3] Investment capital flowing into renewable energy climbed from $80 billion in 2005 to a record $100 billion in 2006.^[4]

It with a Higher Gas Mileage model

Is it better to drive an older, well-maintained car that gets about 25 miles per gallon, or to buy a new car that gets about 35 miles per gallon?

It definitely makes more sense from a green perspective to keep your old car running and well-maintained as long as you can -- especially if it's getting such good mileage. There are significant environmental costs to both manufacturing a new automobile and adding your old car to the ever-growing collective junk heap.

A 2004 analysis by Toyota found that as much as 28% of the carbon dioxide emissions generated during the lifecycle of a typical gasoline-powered car can occur during its manufacture and its transportation to the dealer; the remaining emissions occur during driving once its new owner takes possession. An earlier study by Seikei University in Japan put the pre-purchase number at 12%.

Regardless of which conclusion is closer to the truth, your current car has already passed its manufacture and transport stage, so going forward the relevant comparison has only to do with its remaining footprint against that of a new car's manufacture/transport and driver's footprint -- not to mention the environmental impact of either disposing of your old car or selling it to a new owner who will continue to drive it. There are environmental impacts, too, even if your old car is junked, dismantled and sold for parts.

And don't forget that the new hybrids -- despite lower emissions and better gas mileage -- actually have a much larger environmental impact in their manufacture, compared to non-hybrids. The batteries that store energy for the drive train are no friend to the environment -- and having two engines under one hood increases manufacturing emissions. And all-electric vehicles are only emission-free if the outlet providing the juice is connected to a renewable energy source, not a coal-burning power plant, as is more likely.

If you want to assess your current car's fuel efficiency or emissions, there are many services available online. The government website FuelEconomy.gov provides fuel efficiency stats for hundreds of different vehicles dating back to 1985. Websites TrackYourGasMileage.com and MPGTune.com can help you track your mileage and provide ongoing tips to improve fuel efficiency for your specific make and model vehicle. MyMileMarker.com takes it a step further, making projections about annual mileage, fuel costs and fuel efficiency based on your driving habits. If you have an iPhone, you can keep track of your car's carbon footprint with the new "Greenmeter App" from Hunter Research and Technologies. The program uses numerous variables to make its calculations on-the-go as you drive, including weather conditions, cost of fuel, vehicle weight, and more.

If you simply must change your vehicle, be it for fuel efficiency or any other reason, one option is to simply buy a used car that gets better gas mileage than your existing one. There's much to be said, from many environmental vantage points, about postponing replacement purchases -- of anything, not just cars -- to keep what's already made out of the waste stream and to delay the additional environmental costs of making something new.

This store is one of the best store in Laconia to purchase the finest quality whole, local grown, and organic foods. I love the peanut butter machine. Which will grins fresh peanuts right before your eyes into the best tasting chunky peanut. The next store in Laconia I will add to this list is SustainAbility on main st. This store offers a wide selection of solar heating and electric systems. The store Owner Malik Haig is very knowledgeable on Eco friendly living. His store is well put together and he great with customers. The candles that we carry can also be found in this store. The next place I would like to talk about is All My Life Jewelers also on main st. this shop has the finest jewelery money can buy. Some of the jewelery in made right in house. This store in family owned by Randy & Sue and their son Charlie. This is a fun shop to visit. The next store on my list is Aslyum Sports on Canal st. This store has a wide inventory of Bikes, skate boards, and many accessories. One of the best product in the store in small motorized scooters that will save so much on gas. I will end this list with a few final words. By shoping local we help to keep our money right in our local economy and we can keep our city's and towns Strong. some were down the line this is a great way to be green.
